Go deeper: the world awakening or me?
Take full account of the excellencies which you possess, and in gratitude remember how you would hanker after them, if you had them not — Marcus Aurelius*

Go Deeper
Something woke up within me this last year … the state of being grateful and humbled by the generosity of existence, of feeling my knees weak from awe at nothing in particular, and it changed my world. Is it the world awakening or me? How can I tell? And where do I draw the line anyway? Perhaps as within so without. In spite of appearances, maybe the boundary was never real anyway.
I see others see it too… this awe, this teary lens that reshapes the world and brings into focus something new. Fragments of some shared story convulsing to be born … a harp in a burnt out bus, a huddle in a Hong Kong street, an animal rescue effort in Australia, websites like benevolution and integral life, and the quiet voices on Facebook speaking of tolerance and hope that will not be silenced by the rowdy few. Proof enough for me.
In a fragmented world, I hear the restless stirring of a passion for that which is whole, for the coming together of a world torn to shreds by minds that have forgotten their own limits. Wind-blown threads gathered and rewoven into a vision of a better world. At the loom of our future, integral thinkers like Ken Wilber, Terri O’Fallon and so many others, others just like you and me, toil to weave a new tapestry for a new era, a new vision for what it means to be human in an age when the gods have been pushed aside as the architects for the ways of the world. Now, for better or worse, we decide where to from here.
“Different worlds are brought forth by the structures of consciousness doing the perceiving and co-creating” says Ken.
Amen to that. We create the world into which we are born each day, a truism that brings equal measures of hope and terror. We create our own heaven or hell right here, right now. With every worldview shift, every state change, every new perspective, deeper dimensions of the symphony of the moment are revealed. And with each deep dive, a new world awakens within, and that births a new world out there to support us on our way to wholeness.
Right there is the singular commandment to heal it all: go deeper. In everything. For in the depths of this moment is to be found one taste of the one thing that is already changing the world… soulful consciousness, focused to find what is whole amongst the tattered prayer flags of what we once believed to be true.
New worlds are born for one and for all, new ways of individual seeing that bring forth new worlds we can share; imaginary worlds made of morals and obligations to those not yet born, kinder worlds in orbit around the deep values of sustainability and support for all that wants to survive and thrive.
If the music of our humanity is to continue, we could use a new song. A love song perhaps, for all the gifts of nature that we live and love. One so full of hope that we sing it over and again until it becomes what is real. One that we sing like some quiet hymn, to ourselves and to each other, to keep us from forgetting that which matters most.

Marcus Aurelius
Marcus Aurelius wrote, “take full account of the
excellencies which you possess, and in gratitude
remember how you would hanker after them,
if you had them not.” A worthwhile inquiry,
whether you are a Roman Emperor or a
janitor at Middlebreeze Elementary School…
