Bracing: living in our climate

Nov 23, 2021 | Business

Planetary scale crises—climate, injustice, inequity, plagues—are creating great instability. Yet, the very pressures of these issues could grow us up, individually and culturally, to be sufficient for the challenges that we’re facing.

What may help us do this?

Bracing

I live braced against the edge of the Atlantic. In my far northerly location it’s very easy to realize there’s nothing between me and the climate. For days the wind will roll waves, starting far in the west, maybe on the North American coastline, against the isle I am on. I’ll walk, cycle and camp in it. The rush of wind, and often days of sheeting rain, flows through me like rivers.

Our climate crises mirrors this physical description. All around us systems are shifting. Species, biodiversity, stability, health, economies and much more is being battered and infused with climate impacts.

Extraordinarily we, humans, have changed the entire world—what an achievement! Now we’re conscious of that can we grow quickly enough, catalyze flourishing futures and deliver softer climate landings?

Crises and opportunities

This is our climate promise and opportunity as much as it’s a challenge. Just as it’s a struggle to stand in gaeling wind on my isle’s Atlantic edge (it’s been so strong I’ve turned around, the only place in the world I’ve not walked my intended route) it’s very alive. The visceral experience is wild.

That’s our climate emergency times too. Ferocious, heartbreaking and full of potential as well. And it’s a source for the Transformative Climate Advocacy (TCA) program I’m helping to organize. Foundationally, TCA is about our individual, human species and cultural growth. You are most welcome to join us, info here>, if you’re called to. There are free info sessions and let’s, you-I-we, assist the wild, positive-possibilities to emerge 🙂

Simple version please!

Paradoxes are hard to succinctly summarise but poetry helps to explain some of this too:

Fluent, Conamara Blues by John O’Donohue:

I would love to live
Like a river flows,
Carried by the surprise
Of its own unfolding.

An eight session, 20 week, learning journey explores the interior dimensions of our engagement with climate change including worldviews, beliefs, emotions and awareness. It aims to support the development of change-makers while teaching tools, frameworks and practices to deepen impact.

It aims to help us hold the paradoxes inherent in my bracing piece above. How can something be in crisis and simultaneously fill us with hopeful opportunities? Read more on the Transformative Climate Advocacy program page here>

Coming home

We belong to and are of the Earth but we bypass our sense of belonging. I missed this leaving home and my story mirrors our larger, human-wide journey. What do I need to come home?

Soulprint: Peak nature

Soulprint: Peak nature

Extraordinary: a paradigm shift by 147 governments and the UN endorsing “humans and nature are spiritually connected.” Invitation: to build on this for yourself and all of us.

We are in a portal

We are in a portal

I’ve a deep knowing: we humans have shifted. That’s disorienting so here’s 3 handrails to help: this is sourced in bliss; lubricated by peak oil; agreed by UN & 147 nations; and, all with dragonflies!
